Relief from Dental Anxiety with Oral Conscious Sedation from Dr. Incampo

It’s not uncommon for patients to put off dental visits because of anxiety. In fact, it’s estimated that millions do it every year. But putting off important dental visits can have serious consequences for your smile.

Thankfully, if you have trouble with dental anxiety, Dr. Incampo has a solution that can help you get the care you need to achieve optimal oral health and prevent trouble like gum disease and tooth decay. It’s called sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry comes in different forms. Dr. Incampo’s Wakefield and North Andover offices utilize a form known as oral conscious sedation.

Oral conscious sedation typically involves the use of a prescribed sedative that patients take prior to their appointment. This sedative often isn’t enough to put patients into a deep sleep, but it does promote a state of deep relaxation. Instead of feeling anxious or afraid, patients feel comfortable and at ease, drowsy but still awake enough to answer questions and respond to directions. And the best part is, when the appointment is over, patients have little to no memory of your appointment. It will feel like nothing more than a dream.

Want to find out more about sedation dentistry? Call our Wakefield or North Andover office today schedule an appointment with Dr. Incampo.

How Do Partial Dentures from Differ from Full Dentures?

If you need to restore multiple teeth from either the upper or lower row of your smile, what you need is a partial denture instead of a full denture. But if you’ve never heard of a partial denture (which is also just called a partial), you may not know what differences are.

First, partials feature multiple teeth attached to a gum colored base. But because these teeth are typically spread out instead of in a row, it can be helpful to think of a partial as a puzzle piece.

What’s more, while a full denture is typically secured by adhesive creams or suction, traditional partials are typically held in place by clips or brackets. As with full dentures, though, patients who are candidates for dental implants can choose to go with an implant-supported partial. An implant-supported partial from Dr. Incampo can restore functionality to a patient’s smile in a way that other traditional options can’t.

Call our North Andover or Wakefield dental office if you’d like to schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Incampo. By meeting with you, Dr. Incampo can address any questions or concerns you might have about your smile or your treatment options.

We can help you make your smile whole again.

Understand Your Oral Health in a Whole New Way with Our Intraoral Camera

Do you ever leave your regular exams wishing you had a better understanding of how your smile was doing? X-rays can reveal important details about your oral health, but they often can’t provide the kind of picture you might like to see.

Dr. Incampo’s North Andover and Wakefield dental offices use intraoral cameras precisely because we want all our patients to have a firm understanding of their own oral health.

Here’s how an oral exam with an intraoral camera works:

During your appointment, while you’re resting comfortable in our dental chair, Dr. Incampo will use a pen-sized wand to complete your exam. This wand, which has a camera on the end of it, will transmit video images to our computer, which will then put them on a TV screen, showing you exactly what we’re seeing.

Seeing your smile up close like this can be disarming, but the benefit is that you’ll be able to notice details that might have been impossible to see otherwise. By coming face-to-face with potential problems that you may not even have realized were there, you can begin making changes to your daily oral care routine that will help you improve your smile and your overall health.

To schedule your next appointment with Dr. Incampo, call our North Andover or Wakefield dental office today.

Don’t Forget About Your Smile As You Enjoy This Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is behind us, and from everyone at Dr. Incampo’s Wakefield and North Andover offices, we hope you and your family had a wonderful day of food and fun.

But the holidays aren’t over, as you’re well aware.

With Christmas just around the corner, we’re entering a time filled with almost nonstop holiday treats and parties. And while we don’t want to discourage anyone from enjoying all that the season has to offer, we don’t want you to forget about your smile either. Holiday treats are filled with sugar, and sugar is what gives bacteria the energy it needs to multiply and transform into plaque. So, try keeping these two suggestions in mind.

First, maintain a regular brushing and flossing routine. By brushing twice a day, flossing at least once, and gargling with a quality mouthwash, you’re doing your part to protect your smile from tooth decay and gum disease.

Second, try chewing xylitol gum or mints throughout the day, especially after meals. Xyitol is a natural sugar that actually fights cavities by promoting a healthy pH level in the mouth, making it more difficult for bacteria to cling to teeth.

Click here to learn more about xylitol.

And if you’d like to hear any more suggestions about how you can care for your smile this holiday season, get in touch with either our Wakefield or North Andover office. Dr. Incampo would be happy to answer any questions you might have, in addition to taking a thorough look at your smile to see how it’s doing.

How CEREC Is Helping Dr. Incampo Restore Smiles in Wakefield and North Andover, Part Two

In our post from October 26, we talked about how Dr. Incampo’s Wakefield and North Andover offices are helping patients restore weakened teeth with same-day crowns from CEREC.

But CEREC isn’t just helping us produce quality porcelain crowns in about an hour—they’re also helping us produce inlays and onlays so we can help patients who need something other than a crown.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are used in cases where patients don’t have enough decay to warrant a crown but need more than a filling.  More specifically, an inlay is used to restore the space between the cusps of your teeth, which are the bumps on top of a tooth, while onlays are designed to fit over one or more cusps.

Regardless of which you may need, though inlays and onlays are a conservative solution. In other words, they allow patients to keep more of their natural tooth structure, which in turn lengthens the natural lifespan of the tooth that’s being restored.  And like our same-day crowns, they can milled and placed during a single visit with Dr. Incampo.

How CEREC Is Helping Dr. Incampo Restore Smiles in Wakefield and North Andover, Part One

If you’ve ever been told you need a crown, you know what that process can be like. Restoring a worn down or broken tooth with a crown takes two visits, assuming that nothing happens to your temporary crown in between your first and second appointment.

The problem, though, is that sometimes temporary crowns can fall out or become broken, requiring an extra visit you never anticipated. That’s why Dr. Incampo is using CEREC to help patients restore damaged teeth. CEREC allows us to finish a crown procedure in just a single visit, making the entire process more convenient for our Wakefield and North Andover patients.

Here’s how it works.

Tips for Keeping Your Smile Healthy Before and After Halloween

This time of year, it seems like there’s candy everywhere you go. And while kids are the primary audience for these sweet treats, growing up doesn’t mean you lose your sweet tooth. So, before you indulge in that jumbo-sized bag of Hershey bars or Tootsie Rolls, create a plan of action for yourself and your family.

First, make sure you have a brand new toothbrush. Changing toothbrushes every few months is a great way to protect your mouth from gum disease, as bacteria can easily hide on brush heads.

Second, commit yourself—if you haven’t already—to brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and gargling with a quality mouthwash. A proactive brushing routine like this will help you keep plaque and bacteria at bay, while still letting you enjoy the treats you love (in moderation, of course!).

Third, make sure the brush you’ve chosen has soft bristles and is small enough to help you brush in hard-to-reach areas. It’s not uncommon for patients to have problems brushing the very back of their teeth, but with an appropriate-sized brush, keeping your whole smile clean can be a breeze.

To help you brush more thoroughly you may want to consider replacing what you already have with an electric or battery-powered one. These can help you brush more efficiently and keep your smile even cleaner.

We’ll talk more about what you can do to help your smile as we get closer to Halloween. In the meantime, if you have questions or want to schedule a checkup with Dr. Incampo, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

We have offices in Wakefield and North Andover, and would love to help you in any way we can. Our offices feature a wide range of services, including general, cosmetic, restorative, and implant dentistry.

Make Sure Your Child Is Eating Right at School with Creative, Healthy Lunches

With the new school year well underway now, there’s a good chance you’re back to making school lunches.

But given how hectic weekday mornings can be, finding the time to pack healthy lunches can be difficult, and even when you do manage to pack something healthy, it might end up getting traded in the lunchroom for something that’s tastier to little taste buds but not as good for little smiles.

Children crave sweets, and there’s nothing wrong with a cookie or two from time to time, but sugar can have a corrosive effect on teeth, leading to extra bacteria and plaque buildup and, eventually, decay and gum disease. Nutritious foods by themselves can’t protect teeth, but they do have anti-oxidants, which are good for ridding the body of free radicals, and are loaded with vitamins and minerals a growing body needs.

So, how can you send your child to school with a healthy lunch that won’t get traded?

Try thinking out of the box. Carrot sticks are great, but what can you pair them with that will have your child on pins and needles waiting for the lunch bell? And what about fruits, like apples, grapes, or oranges? Can you think of ways to make these healthy foods more appealing for your child without cancelling out their nutritious benefits?

We’d love to hear about what you’re sending with your child. What kinds of healthy recipes have you discovered lately? Leave us a comment below!

Digital Radiography Gives Us a Clearer Picture of Your Smile

X-rays are important. They help us understand how your smile is doing, and if we find a problem they can help us decide how best to treat it.

But traditional radiography isn’t perfect. It’s emits radiation, for one thing. For another, it’s uncomfortable for patients.

But even without these drawbacks, there are still others. Traditional X-rays have to be developed, and that means using hazardous chemicals. Storage can be a problem, too.

But with digital radiography, much of this can be eliminated completely.

Taking Digital X-rays Is Easier for Us and Safer for You

Digital radiography is more comfortable for patients because all it takes to get the job done is a single sensor. With just this one sensor, we can take an X-ray of any part of your smile.

What’s more, your X-rays can be taken more safely, too. Digital radiography emits up to 90% less radiation than traditional radiography.

Once your X-rays have been taken, nothing needs to be developed. Your images can simply be easily accessed on a chairside monitor, where Dr. Incampo can zoom in on them or highlight areas he wants to talk with you about.  This allows patients to understand better than ever before how their smile is doing and what can be done to make it healthier.

As for us, digital radiography takes care of the storage issue. Instead of needing room to store all of our patient X-rays, we can simply save them to a hard drive, where we can access them later on as needed.

Curious About Digital Radiography from Dr. Incampo?

Contact one of our offices today to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Incampo. We serve patients from North Andover, Wakefield, and surrounding areas.
